Helpful Tips For Vacuuming Carpet
When it comes to caring for your wool or synthetic carpet, vacuuming is a crucial step. Regular and thorough vacuuming can increase its lifespan as build-up of soil and dirt particles can potentially damage carpet fibre.
Regular vacuuming also helps to realign areas of disoriented pile from general wear. Having a well-maintained carpet can make it easier to deal with spills and stains.
Our wool carpets also come with a Lifetime Soil Resistance Limited Warranty* and our Lifetime Food & Beverage Stain Resistance Limited Warranty*, giving you extra peace of mind for a future proof carpet in your home.

What vacuum type is best for my carpet?
The most common question people ask is ‘What type of vacuum should I be using on my carpet?’. As the carpet experts for 60+ years, here's what we recommend to look out for when choosing which vacuum cleaner to buy. This applies to both cut pile and loop pile carpets, whether wool or solution-dyed nylon.
Recommended vacuum features
- Non-rotating or plain suction vacuum head, such as the Miele Guard range or SEBO domestic vacuum cleaners.
- Strong suction: essential for pulling embedded soil out of carpet fibres.
- Adjustable height/brush control allows you to raise the brush or turn it off.
- Change or empty waste compartments frequently and replace filters as recommended by the manufacturer.
What to avoid
- Robot vacuums
- Cordless/stick vacuums: not recommended as the main tool for maintenance but ok for a light vacuum.
- Excessive rotating head use: can cause frizzing, matting, and fibre loss.
How to vacuum your carpet

Vacuum regularly
Vacuum at least once a week and more often in high-traffic areas such as hallways, entrance ways and living rooms. This will remove soil and dirt particles as well as prevent debris becoming embedded in the pile, which can cause accelerated wear by grinding at the base of the tufts.
Make sure you vacuum under infrequently moved furniture every three months.
Slow movements
When vacuuming, it is also important to move the vacuum cleaner slowly, to give time for the dirt to be shaken out and sucked up. Avoid excessive downward pressure on the suction head, which tends to flatten the carpet.
Keep your vacuum maintained
To clean your carpet effectively the vacuum cleaner must be well maintained, and filters and dust bags must be changed or cleaned regularly. Tests have proven that a vacuum cleaner’s suction is greatly reduced even by a partially filled dust bag. Older vacuum cleaners may need to be checked.
