It all started with a red jumper
Founders Tony Timpson and Grant Biel shared a belief: prosperity comes from simplicity. With a blend of innovative thinking and practical dedication, they set out to create products of timeless beauty.
Grant’s engineering skills became the cornerstone of their venture as he meticulously built their first tufting machine. Yet, in a twist of fate, they found themselves without any yarn for the inaugural test run. Ever resourceful, they turned to the red woollen jersey Grant was wearing. Slowly, thread by thread, they unravelled it, infusing every fibre with their vision.
From this humble beginning, they crafted their very first piece of carpet—a small red square that embodied perfection. This wasn’t just a carpet; it was a testament to their belief in simplicity, their commitment to quality, and their passion for creating something truly enduring.
Tony and Grant’s journey was not merely about manufacturing carpets; it was about crafting experiences and forging connections. Their story is woven into every fibre of their creations elevated, considered, and refined. From that single red square, they built a legacy of products that are not only beautiful but also resilient, durable, and natural.
Today, their legacy lives on, reminding us that true craftsmanship begins with a vision, a touch of innovation, and the dedication to create something that stands the test of time.
In May 2021, we reached a significant milestone. We celebrated the production of our last synthetic carpet, marking our exit from the synthetic carpet market. Our focus on New Zealand wool honours our past, and we believe wool is the best fibre for design, performance and innovation for years to come. This decision to exit the synthetic carpet market has reduced our annual plastic consumption by approximately 2,500 tonnes, reflecting our commitment to stopping the plastics problem at source.
Our journey now focuses on circularity. Our goal is to design and manufacture carpet using 100% compostable materials by researching replacements for the last remaining synthetic components in wool carpets. We are working to ensure that the materials we use are sustainably sourced and can be returned to the earth at the end of their useful life. We are also giving waste wool carpet a second chance as recycled carpet underlay. This approach aligns with our dedication to creating high-quality, durable products that resonate with nature. Together, we can craft a future where wool helps create warm, cozy homes with a light tread on the planet.
